Got this trilogy, and…let’s talk about who this movie is for and what it’s about

I always like to first tell my opinion on something, so that the reader has a more or less clear understanding of the person on whose behalf the post is written. I am far from the world of comics and superhero movies, with the exception of the Dark Knight trilogy and a few other trilogy films. That is, I am not a fan of superhero movies in general, so my view on this film is a little different.

When I came across this trilogy, or rather the film Glass, which was released this year, I became curious about what it was about (after one review). It turned out that it is a trilogy and I am being told about the final part. We decided to watch everything from beginning to end to have a complete picture. Let’s dwell on each film in more detail, but without spoilers.

Unbreakable

Unbreakable tells the story of a strange passenger who is the only survivor of a train accident. This character himself is unable to explain how it happened and why he stayed alive. The film tries to reveal the secret of this character to us and explain the incomprehensible. There is no radioactive spider biting someone here, there are no super gadgets or rays from the eyes, because as the title of the film itself says – a person has the gift of invulnerability, which can generally be explained by the ordinary luck of a particular person. Trying to understand who he is, he meets another character who, in turn, is prone to injury at the slightest fall. In between, the story of comics and superheroes is touched upon and the fact that a supervillain does not always have a clear face and sometimes the scariest is not the one who does something physically or threatens to kill.

Overall, the first film introduces us to the main characters of the trilogy and is quite complete. It doesn’t have any large-scale battle scenes or fights (almost none at all), and therefore it is clear that the film will not be interesting to everyone. The film is classified as a psychological thriller, so fans of this genre will like the film the most.

Split

The characters from the first film are only mentioned in Split, the film itself tells the story of the third character – a character with many personalities, or to be more precise, about 23. The life of a person with such a disorder cannot be ordinary. In one shot, he is a 9-year-old child, in another, a fashion designer, and each of the personalities is an individuality, may have a certain disease that the others do not have. In this film, they tried to show a disease called multiple personality disorder through the prism of superpowers. Each personality displaces the other, argues with each other. This is a kind of two-faced person from the Batman comics, but in a much stranger form. The skill of the actor who played the main character (James Makeway) makes you watch the film without looking up, which lasts almost 2 hours, and until the last moment you have no idea.

In this part, some of the character’s abilities are shown less clearly, thereby making the film more fantastic, on a par with the first picture. If in the first film you try to explain some moments to yourself from a logical point of view, then here it becomes less real. However, it is interesting to watch how a calm person in one image becomes a real monster in another of his personality variations. This film will be interesting to those who have not had the opportunity to observe mental disorders of people somewhere, but who are interested in seeing firsthand how it happens. This part is the most suitable for the psychological thriller genre. Are people born monsters, or are they made so by their loved ones? Is a person able to tame the monster that sleeps inside, or will the monster prevail and change his life forever? While watching this film, I was repeatedly reminded of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In general, the idea is very close.

Glass

The culmination of the story is the film “Glass”. It is in it that all three heroes meet and each of them pursues their own goals. If the previous two parts were two full-fledged films that can be watched separately, then the third film should be watched only after the first two. Perhaps that is why this part received the worst ratings among the other parts, because many moments are not told here and the story looks incomplete and truncated, despite the duration of more than 2 hours. When watching, I many times put myself in the place of an ordinary viewer who came to see a film in the cinema, and … realized that the film is about nothing. By itself. It tells some strange story about three characters (spoiler) who ended up in a mental hospital. Who are they, how do they know each other, what connects them, why did they stay alive after falling out of the window, who is this person who kidnapped the girls and why did he kidnap them, what kind of strange guy in a wheelchair does not react to anything for half the film … this is exactly what the film looks like if you watch it separately. Is it the viewers’ fault for not watching the previous two parts? I think not, since they were still independent films.

Despite the fact that (as the third) film has a full-fledged plot and a final resolution (as someone who has watched all the parts, it seemed about as strange as Game of Thrones), there is not a feeling of incompleteness, but rather an understanding that it could have been done differently.

Summarily

Conceptually, it’s closer to The Dark Knight than The Avengers. It’s not a trilogy about superheroes, it’s more of a tragic story about people who had and maybe not some obscure abilities. To a greater extent, this film (each in the series) tells us that every person is unique. That every person, even if strong, is weak in their own way. The trilogy is certainly unique and will be interesting to those who want to get away from comedies and some more serious films. This is the rare case when both of us, who have watched all three films, have no reason to say that the film has a bad plot, actors, or a boring idea. Each of the films lasts an average of 2 hours, but personally I did not have a feeling of any delay. Everyone in their places gradually introduces us to the course of events, revealing new details of the plot.

If we talk about what rating I would give to this or that part, then Invulnerable would get a solid 5, Split a 6, and Glass, more likely, a 4. The average rating of the trilogy, respectively, is 5 tentacles out of 6 🙂

All three films can be watched in one sitting, in three consecutive evenings, and I assure you, you will be satisfied. Each of them leaves a pleasant aftertaste, which I, at one time, had after watching Fight Club or The Prestige. When you seem to want more, and at the same time you understand that the film is over and this story has remained in your memory 🙂
