Have you ever wondered what happens after death?..

People who encounter file loss regret it, and next time (most likely) try to make a copy. In general, it is very convenient when you can, for example, make a copy of your workplace, and in a week, month, year, restore and get the same thing you are used to. But what to do with the loss of… a person?

I like to watch old TV series from the era of zero, when there were no services like Netflix, and the series were either multi-episode (like Brazilian or Mexican), or small and with a unique story. Back then, it was not perceived as some kind of miracle, and you just watched what the TV offered you. But not all TV series could be seen at that time in my childhood on TV, and certain stories catch up with you only now – at a time when the old picture format hurts the eye on widescreen monitors. However, this does not prevent you from enjoying series like the one we will talk about today, namely – Dead Like Me.

The series came out on the screens back in 2003, and was (as it is fashionable to say now) an “original story”. During an accident on the Mir space station, a toilet lid comes off and flies straight to the ground. It bursts into the atmosphere and hits a girl named George (Georgia), killing her. But death is not always the end of the road, and George becomes a reaper – a creature that takes people’s souls right before their death.

George works in a team with other people – his “boss” Rube (Mandy Patinkin, also known for his role in the series “Criminal Minds”), Mason (Callum Blue), Roxy (Jasmine Guy), Daisy (Laura Harris) and Betty (Rebecca Gayhart). Each of them has their own story, for example, Mason died trying to find “eternal high” and drilled his own head. Roxy was strangled by a leg warmer (an item of clothing) that she invented herself, and Betty jumped into a shallow river from a cliff. Despite death, each of the characters remembers their past lives, and, as can be seen throughout the series, this life itself does not let go of each of them. Everyone has a feeling of some kind of incompleteness, unrealizable. However…this does not matter, since, even remaining to live in the world among the living, their personal appearance has changed for everyone around them, and they become unrecognizable to those who knew them before.

The timing of the series is interesting precisely because we are shown not a story about how certain eccentrics died in a strange way and their souls were taken from them, but continues the stories of Georgia’s family and other heroes who work as reapers. The main character’s family is given more time, as all her loved ones (mother, father, sister, grandmother) are still alive, and each of them experiences this loss in their own way. The youngest one is the hardest to survive the loss, who remains as if in the shadow of her deceased sister. But life goes on, and…although it shouldn’t be done like that, the sister tries to always be there.

The series, over the course of 29 episodes, tries to show us what things we don’t notice throughout life, and only begin to see when we lose them. The ability to be more social, more friendly, more…alive. And they are shown both from the side of a person who can’t do something because she’s gone, and from the side of those who are left to live on after the loss.

Despite the fact that the other reapers lost their lives much earlier, it seems that Georgia, with her lively and youthful disposition, becomes the catalyst for everyone to start remembering how they were lost and trying to catch up on what they didn’t have time to do during their lives.

In my opinion, everyone should watch this series to better understand themselves, their loved ones, learn to notice important moments and perceive certain things differently. so that it doesn’t happen that you too have to watch everything “from the sidelines”, without the opportunity to change anything or somehow relive what was lost. I recommend watching
